1948-D Repunched Mintmark RPM-001

Description

A triple-punched mintmark — D/D/D — with visible serif details from all three impressions makes this inaugural-year Franklin Half Dollar RPM-001 one of the more dramatic repunched mintmarks in the series. Three separate applications of the D mintmark punch mean the die maker struck the letter, assessed the placement, adjusted, struck again, assessed again, and corrected a third time before accepting the final position. Evidence of three impressions is uncommon because most RPMs involve only two punch applications; a third strike indicates the initial two placements both fell outside acceptable tolerance. The "Serifs" notation highlights that the serif details — the small decorative strokes at the D's terminals — from the earlier punches remain visible alongside the final D, providing three overlapping sets of these fine letter details. The 1948-D was the first year of the Franklin Half Dollar series at Denver, designed by John R. Sinnock with Benjamin Franklin's portrait on the obverse and the Liberty Bell on the reverse. Struck in 90% silver at 30.6mm and 12.5 grams. Triple-punched mintmarks on the series' debut year add both variety significance and first-year collecting appeal.
