Description

Pairing a doubled die reverse with a repunched mintmark, WDDR-001 of the 1948-D Franklin Half Dollar represents a dual-variety die of particular interest to collectors. The reverse displays Class II spread toward the center on E PLURIBUS UNUM and the dots, with strongest doubling on UNUM. Class II doubling produces inward-converging spread, and the concentration on UNUM makes that inscription the primary attribution area. The die also carries WRPM-003, a repunched D showing D/D tilted or rotated, adding a second independently cataloged variety. A small die gouge on the upper center of the right diagonal bar of M in UNUM serves as an additional marker. The Franklin Half Dollar series, designed by Sinnock and struck 1948 through 1963, debuted in 1948, making this a first-year coin. Attributed by the Wexler Team as Wexler 1948-D 50c WDDR-001. Struck in 90% silver and 10% copper at 12.50 grams, this inaugural-year Franklin Half Dollar combines hub doubling with a repunched mintmark on a single collectible coin.
