1948 (D) Franklin Half Dollar - Doubled Die Obverse WDDO-002

Description

1948-D WDDO-002 is a doubled die obverse on the 1948-D Franklin half dollar, cataloged by the Wexler team. The doubling is a Class II spread toward the center that grows stronger toward the right. BER of LIBERTY and IN GOD WE TRUST are doubled, and the head's top and TY of LIBERTY are tripled. On the obverse, a light NE/SW scratch lies between the head and LIBERTY's E, and in the field east of the Y in LIBERTY, below its center, there is a small gouge. The reverse carries WRPM-002, a D/D Tilted (Rotated). A very short gouge sits left of the bell hanger, slightly below its center, and an N/S gouge lies in the field roughly midway between the H and A of HALF. Brian Ostro submitted the variety. Wexler lists no cross-references.
