About This Coin
The 1948 Franklin Half Dollar is a United States half dollar from the Franklin Half Dollars 1948-1963 series. The obverse features Benjamin Franklin facing right, while the reverse displays the Liberty Bell. Designed by John R. Sinnock/John Frederick Lewis. Struck in 90% silver, 10% copper, weighing 12.5 grams, 30 mm in diameter, with a reeded edge. Produced at the Denver, Philadelphia, and San Francisco Mints. The Franklin Half Dollar honored founding father Benjamin Franklin, making it one of the few U.S. coins to depict a non-president. Sinnock's design was criticized for its inclusion of a small eagle on the reverse next to the Liberty Bell — required by law but considered artistically poor. Congress also mandated that the crack in the Liberty Bell be visible. A short series (1948-1963) that is completable in high grade with modest investment. Full Bell Lines (FBL) designation adds significant premiums. The 1953-S is a condition rarity in FBL.
