Description

An S/S West repunched mintmark on a 1948 San Francisco Roosevelt Dime, WRPM-018 was submitted by Tony Russo and shows the secondary S displaced west. Obverse markers include die scratches on the cheek, an ESE/WNW die crack at the upper right of the head, and short N/S die scratches on the nose. The reverse displays scratches south from the torch holder bottom and a NW/SE die crack through the left N in ONE. The die crack on the obverse suggests structural fatigue had begun, and its presence alongside the RPM helps narrow specimens to this specific working die. Attributed by the Wexler Team under Wexler Variety ID 1948-S 10-cent WRPM-018. The 1948-S Roosevelt Dime was produced during the early series years when San Francisco struck dimes for general circulation, and hand-punching of the S mintmark created conditions for repunched varieties like this westward-displaced example.
