1948-S Repunched Mintmark RPM-008

Description

Attributed by VarietyVista as UVC-745, DMR-009, this 1948 San Francisco Mint Roosevelt Dime shows a repunched mintmark with an S/S Rotated CW (clockwise) orientation, indicating the initial S punch was applied at a rotated angle before being corrected to the final upright position. Three die stages have been documented: Stage A (early die state), Stage B (mid-die state), and Stage C (late die state). The rotated clockwise orientation distinguishes RPM-008 from other 1948-S repunched mintmark varieties, as most RPMs show simple directional shifts rather than rotational displacement. Rotated RPMs occurred when the mintmark punch was turned slightly on its axis during the initial strike into the working die, producing a tilted secondary impression that is diagnostically distinct. Struck in 90% silver (0.900 fine), the 1948-S Roosevelt Dime carries John R. Sinnock's portrait of Franklin Roosevelt, introduced just two years earlier. San Francisco produced multiple die pairs for this date, and the variety of RPM orientations documented across them demonstrates the inherent variability of the hand-punching process used at the Mint during this era.
