1948-S Repunched Mintmark RPM-005

Description

Documented by VarietyVista on the 1948-S Roosevelt Dime, RPM-005 is a repunched mintmark variety catalogued under UVC-180 and DMR-006. The 1948-S Roosevelt Dime was struck in 90% silver at the San Francisco Mint, part of the inaugural decade of the series that debuted in 1946. Roosevelt Dimes of this era carried individually hand-punched mintmarks, a practice that produced repunched mintmark varieties when initial placements were corrected. Die stages are documented in three phases: Stage A is early die state, currently unconfirmed. Stage B sees both reverse and obverse reach mid-die state. Stage C is late die state, marked by a light die crack on the reverse running from the right stem southward to the lower I of DIME, with the obverse also at late die state. The Stage C stem-to-DIME die crack is the most accessible late-state marker and helps narrow the die state of any specimen before attributing. Roosevelt Dimes were designed by John R. Sinnock and struck in 90% silver through 1964. Repunched mintmark varieties on silver Roosevelt Dimes are well documented in VarietyVista but encountered less often than on the higher-mintage Lincoln cent series.
