1948-S Repunched Mintmark RPM-003

Description

Attributed by VarietyVista as UVC-178, DMR-004, this 1948 San Francisco Mint Roosevelt Dime displays a repunched mintmark where the initial S punch placement left visible traces alongside the corrected final position. Three die stages have been documented: Stage A (early die state), Stage B (mid-die state), and Stage C (late die state), enabling collectors to sequence their specimens within this die pair's production run. The San Francisco Mint struck Roosevelt Dimes from the series inception in 1946, and repunched mintmarks from these early S-mint issues are particularly sought after by variety collectors. Hand-punching the S mintmark into each working die introduced the possibility of misplacement, and when the initial impression landed off-target, the correction left diagnostic evidence that distinguishes one die from another. John R. Sinnock's portrait of Franklin Roosevelt debuted just two years before this coin was struck.
