1941-D Repunched Mintmark RPM-001

Description

Carrying attribution codes UVC-091 and DMR-002, this 1941-D Lincoln Wheat Cent repunched mintmark is the first catalogued RPM for this date in the VarietyVista reference system. A repunched mintmark results when the mintmark punch is applied more than once to a working die without precise re-registration, leaving a secondary impression adjacent to or overlapping the primary mark. Three die stages are documented. Stage A: early die state, unconfirmed. Stage B, the middle die state: a very light die crack develops over the V.D.B. designer's initials on the reverse. Stage C, the late die state: the secondary mintmark impression becomes very weak — a common phenomenon as die metal flows and polishing smooths the surface — with the reverse also in late die state. The Stage B crack over V.D.B. provides a confirming middle-stage marker. Repunched mintmarks on Lincoln Wheat Cents from the 1940s are among the most actively collected variety types; the RPM-001 designation identifies this as among the first documented for 1941-D.
