1941-D Repunched Mintmark WRPM-021
Error
Description
Twenty-first in the documented sequence of repunched mintmarks for the 1941-D Lincoln Wheat Cent, WRPM-021 exhibits the D mintmark punched over a previous D positioned to the south, consistent with the dominant displacement pattern across this date's RPM population. No visible obverse die markers accompany this variety, requiring attribution through the repunched mintmark alone. Cross-referenced under Wexler Variety ID: 1941-D 1¢ WRPM-021 with no other known references, this variety was attributed by the Wexler Team. The consistency of the D/D South orientation across multiple 1941-D RPMs suggests a systematic tendency in the die preparation workflow at Denver, where engravers may have habitually positioned their initial punch slightly north of the intended location. Each mintmark was applied individually by hand using a steel letter punch and mallet, a process that introduced human variability into every die. The 1941-D Lincoln Wheat Cent was produced in the tens of millions, and the die consumption necessary for this output meant scores of individual mintmark applications throughout the year. Victor David Brenner's Wheat Cent design had been in continuous production since 1909, and by 1941 the series was entering its final seventeen years before the Memorial reverse transition in 1959.
