1941 (D) Lincoln Wheat Cent - Repunched Mintmark WRPM-020

Description

Displaying the D mintmark repunched over a previous D to the south, the 1941-D WRPM-020 is the twentieth cataloged repunched mintmark for a date that produced over 128 million cents at the Denver Mint. The D/D South orientation reveals that the engraver's initial punch landed slightly north of the desired position, requiring a corrective second impression further south. No visible obverse die markers have been identified, which makes the mintmark repunching itself the primary attribution diagnostic for this variety. Cross-referenced under Wexler Variety ID: 1941-D 1¢ WRPM-020 with no other known cross-references, this variety was attributed by the Wexler Team. Twenty RPMs cataloged for the 1941-D date reflects the frequency with which mintmark repositioning occurred during manual die preparation, a process that required each working die to receive its mintmark individually by hand punch before the Mint transitioned to hubbed mintmarks in 1990. The 1941 Lincoln Wheat Cent was the last full year of peacetime production before America entered World War II, and Denver's substantial contribution to that year's cent supply consumed enough dies to generate a significant population of mintmark positioning variants.
