1941-D Repunched Mintmark WRPM-019
Error
Description
Nineteenth in the extensive catalog of repunched mintmarks for the 1941-D Lincoln Wheat Cent, WRPM-019 shows the D mintmark punched over a previous D positioned to the south. No visible obverse die markers have been documented for this particular die, making the repunched mintmark itself the sole attribution feature. Cross-referenced under Wexler Variety ID: 1941-D 1¢ WRPM-019 with no other known references, this variety was attributed by the Wexler Team. The D/D South displacement pattern indicates the first mintmark punch landed north of the final intended position, with the second corrective punch placed further south — a common orientation among 1941-D RPMs that suggests consistent tendencies in mintmark positioning by Denver's die preparation staff. Nineteen cataloged RPMs for a single date speaks to the systematic hand-punching process used before 1990, where each individual working die received its mintmark through a separate manual operation rather than as part of the master hub design. Denver struck over 128 million cents in 1941, the final full year before Pearl Harbor drew America into World War II, and the die consumption required for this output created ample opportunity for mintmark repositioning events across the production run.
