1940-D Repunched Mintmark RPM-004

Description

This 1940 Denver Mint Washington Quarter exhibits a repunched mint mark with D over D South displacement, cataloged as RPM-004 with cross-references UVC-0142 and DMR-015 in the VarietyVista system. Three die stages have been identified: Stage A represents an early die state that remains unconfirmed, Stage B documents a mid-die state also awaiting confirmation, and Stage C captures a late die state on the reverse paired with a mid-die state obverse. The southward displacement of the secondary D beneath the primary mint mark is characteristic of hand-punched varieties from this era, when each working die received its mint mark individually at the branch mint. John Flanagan's Washington Quarter, introduced in 1932 to commemorate the bicentennial of George Washington's birth, was struck in 90% silver through 1964. The 1940 Denver issue was produced during rising mintages as the economy recovered from the Depression. Repunched mint marks on pre-war silver quarters remain actively collected, with RPM-004's multiple die stages offering specialists a progression showing the die's working life.
