Description
The 1940 Washington quarter was produced as the United States emerged from the Great Depression and approached the brink of World War II. John Flanagan's silver quarter design continued unchanged, featuring Washington's portrait after Houdon's 1785 bust on the obverse and the heraldic eagle reverse. Struck at the Denver Mint, this issue is identified by the D mint mark on the reverse beneath the eagle's tail feathers. The coin is composed of 90% silver and 10% copper, weighing 6.25 grams with a diameter of 24.3mm and a reeded edge.
Rarity Notes
Semi-key date with a mintage of 2,797,600 pieces. Scarcer than most issues in the series and particularly challenging to find in higher uncirculated grades.
