1940 (D) Washington Quarter - Doubled Die Obverse WDDO-003

Description

1940-D WDDO-003 is a doubled die obverse on the 1940-D Washington quarter, cataloged by the Wexler team. A close spread toward the ENE shows on IN GOD WE TRUST, and a close spread toward the center shows on LIBERTY. On the obverse, right of the 1 in the date there is a small gouge (dot), and an E/W scratch lies right of the top of the 4. A crack crosses the base of the bust and enters the lower queue, and a WNW/ESE scratch lies between the T and Y in LIBERTY. Wexler notes that the reverse die used with this doubled die obverse is the same one found with WDDO-001, here in a slightly later die state. Its reverse markers: a crack through the PL of PLURIBUS, a short gouge heading SW off the first S in STATES from its middle, and a crack down the eagle's right wing. Whaden Curtis submitted the variety. Wexler lists no cross-references. The photos were taken for the Wexler Files by Billy G. Crawford. Wexler includes it in its "Best Of" varieties.
