Description

DDO-001, which Wexler numbers WDDO-001, is a doubled die obverse on the 1940-D Washington quarter with strong spread on GOD WE and the UST of TRUST. Both catalogs cite Cherrypickers FS-101; Wexler writes it FS-25-1940D-101 (012.5). Wexler's Coins and Die Varieties describes a spread to the ESE on IN GOD WE TRUST and on the upper front part of the neck. On the obverse it lists a scratch heading SE from the N of IN at its lower left, another heading SE from the base of the first T in TRUST, one heading NW from the W in WE at the top center, two heading NW from the top of the I of IN, and a NW/SE scratch left of the chin. On the reverse a crack passes through the PL of PLURIBUS, a short gouge heads SW from the middle of the first S in STATES, and a crack descends the eagle's right wing. CONECA lists the die as 1-O-II, and Kevin Flynn submitted it. VarietyVista credits Bill Hughes. Under UVC-0129 and DMR-002, stage B shows many light scratches on the obverse in an early-middle state and a crack down the eagle's right wing in a late state; VarietyVista adds that this reverse die, slightly later, was also paired with DDO-007. Stage A (early), stage C (obverse middle, reverse die changed) and stage D (late) are all unconfirmed.
