1927 Indian Head Quarter Eagle - PC-250c(Au)-1927-01 Pre-Cud

Description

This pre-cud is documented on a 1927 Indian Head quarter eagle struck at the Philadelphia Mint. Cataloged as PC-250c(Au)-1927-01 by Cuds on Coins, the pre-cud stage indicates a die crack that runs from the rim and back to it, enclosing a section still held as part of the die — had the die continued in service, that section might have broken free and, if lost, left a full cud with a raised blob of metal at the rim's edge. The Indian Head Quarter Eagle series (1908-1929), designed by Bela Lyon Pratt, has an incuse design: every element except the mint mark is recessed below the coin's surface rather than raised above it. This revolutionary approach, inspired by Egyptian art and championed by President Theodore Roosevelt during his "Renaissance" of American coin design, was applied only to the Quarter Eagle and Half Eagle denominations. The host coin is 90% gold and 10% copper, 18 mm in diameter and 4.18 grams. Cuds on Coins credits the images to Jon Sullivan and lists no cross-reference.
