In 1929, coins were struck at the Philadelphia Mint with a combined mintage of 532,000. This ranks 6th of 13 years by total mintage, below the series median of 565,057. The obverse features a Native American chief wearing a feathered headdress, designed in incuse (sunken) relief — a revolutionary departure from traditional raised relief coinage and the reverse displays a standing eagle on a bundle of arrows with an olive branch. Final year of the Indian Head Quarter Eagle. The Great Depression and gold hoarding ended the denomination. Struck in 90% gold, 10% copper, weighing 4.18 grams, 18 mm in diameter, with a reeded edge.
