Description
The 1914 (D) Indian Head Quarter Eagle is a Gold Quarter Eagle produced at the Denver Mint as part of the Indian Head Quarter Eagles 1908-1929 series. With a mintage of 448,000, this is a less common issue — the higher-mintage of the two mint variants, representing 65% of production. The obverse features a Native American chief wearing a feathered headdress, designed in incuse (sunken) relief — a revolutionary departure from traditional raised relief coinage and the reverse displays a standing eagle on a bundle of arrows with an olive branch. The 1914-D is a better date from the Denver Mint. Philadelphia also struck quarter eagles. Struck at the Denver Mint, established in 1906 from an earlier assay office that processed Colorado gold rush metal. Estimated market value ranges from $866 to $2.3K depending on grade and condition. Struck in 90% gold, 10% copper, weighing 4.18 grams, 18 mm in diameter, with a reeded edge. Cataloged as PCGS #7947.
