About This Coin
The Fugio cent was the first coin ordered by the United States. On April 21, 1787 Congress authorized a contract with James Jarvis for copper coin, and on July 6, 1787 it set the design: thirteen linked circles around UNITED STATES and WE ARE ONE, and a sundial under the sun with FUGIO, 1787 and MIND YOUR BUSINESS. Abel Buell of New Haven is named as the die maker. Collectors sort the coins by the rays of the sun, the ornaments beside FUGIO and the date and the wording of the band, using Eric Newman's numbers, and this group also holds the pattern pieces with AMERICAN CONGRESS, die and hub impressions, and the restrikes made about 1860.
