Description

This 1787 Fugio cent has a cross after the date, no cinquefoils and UNITED STATES on the band. On April 21, 1787 Congress authorized a contract with James Jarvis for copper coin of the federal standard, and on July 6, 1787 it fixed the design: thirteen linked circles around a band reading UNITED STATES and WE ARE ONE, and a sundial under the sun with FUGIO, 1787 and MIND YOUR BUSINESS. Charles Bushnell, quoted by Crosby, named Abel Buell of New Haven as the die maker. Collectors sort the coins by the sun's rays (pointed or club-shaped), the ornaments beside FUGIO and the date (cinquefoils or a cross), and the order of the words on the band; Eric Newman's numbers name the die pairs. The obverse is Newman's first, with a cross after the date in place of the usual cinquefoils; with reverse B it is Newman 1-B. Catalogue numbers: Newman 1-B.
