Description
This is a restrike of the AMERICAN CONGRESS Fugio design in copper. The pieces called New Haven restrikes were long said to come from original dies found in the Broome and Platt store at New Haven, where the Fugio cents had been coined; Crosby and Newman both tell that story. Later research, reported in dealers' catalogs and on the Notre Dame colonial coin pages, holds that they were struck about 1860 from new dies, probably by the Scovill Manufacturing Company of Waterbury for Horatio N. Rust (search). PCGS number 914007.
