1787 Fugio Cent - Large Letters States United
Strike TypeCoin Details
Description
Readily identifiable by oversized letter punches on the reverse, this 1787 Fugio cent combines large lettering with the reversed legend order "STATES UNITED." The large letters are easily distinguished from standard-size lettering, indicating a different set of letter punches that gives the inscription a bolder appearance within the chain link design. The reversed "States United" legend, found on a subset of Fugio cent dies, has generated scholarly discussion about whether it emphasizes individual states' primacy or simply reflects a die sinker's variation. The combination of both features narrows this variety to a specific die or small group within the Newman reference catalog. Fugio cents were authorized by Congress on April 21, 1787, with designs attributed to Benjamin Franklin: the sundial with FUGIO and MIND YOUR BUSINESS on the obverse, and thirteen chain links with WE ARE ONE on the reverse. Production was contracted to James Jarvis at New Haven, Connecticut, and struck in copper. The large letters variety is moderately scarce, and its distinctive character makes it one of the more easily identifiable varieties for collectors.
