Description

Found by Tanaka Davis and documented in the Trail Dies catalog, the 2011P(USG)-100DER-003T is a trail die reverse variety on the 2011 Philadelphia Mint Presidential Dollar honoring Ulysses S. Grant, struck in Position A edge lettering orientation. Trail die varieties on Presidential Dollars are notable because the series' manganese-brass clad composition and edge-lettered format create unique production conditions distinct from traditional cent and nickel trail die events. Die marker documentation identifies Stage B at mid-die-state with an obverse die crack from the S in Grant's name abbreviation USG extending to the rim, and a reverse die crack from the D of PRESIDENT extending to the rim. The parallel die crack systems on both faces — each running from a lettered element to the rim — document concurrent structural deterioration across both dies in this pairing, indicating the die pair had accumulated substantial striking fatigue by the time these specimens were produced. The Presidential Dollar was struck at the Philadelphia Mint in manganese-brass clad composition with a copper core, weighing 8.10 grams with a 26.5 mm diameter and smooth edge bearing incuse lettering including the date, mint mark, and motto. The Ulysses S. Grant Presidential Dollar was the eighteenth issue in the Presidential Dollar series authorized by the Presidential $1 Coin Act of 2005. The Position A designation indicates the edge lettering is oriented with the date reading upright relative to the obverse, distinguishing this from Position B specimens where the date reads upright relative to the reverse — a rotational manufacturing variable that doubles the potential die variety population for each Presidential Dollar issue.
