Description

Found by Cal Goodard, this Trail Dies-cataloged Presidential Dollar from the Philadelphia Mint features a trail die obverse on the 2011 Ulysses S. Grant design, Position A. Die markers at Stage B: obverse at MDS with a small die crack from the left brow into the field and another small die crack from the wave of hair under the M of JAMES extending into the field, plus distinctive dimples from the bottom of the letters in the name JAMES GARFIELD; reverse at MDS with no additional markers. The JAMES GARFIELD letter dimples indicate this obverse die received faint impressions from an adjacent Garfield Presidential Dollar die during storage or handling, a production artifact that documents inter-die contact outside the striking chamber. Struck in manganese brass clad composition at 8.1 grams and 26.5 mm, the Presidential Dollar program ran from 2007 onward, honoring each president in order of service.

Die Markers

  • Stage “B“, obverse is MDS – a small die crack is seen from the left brow into the field. Another small die crack is seen from the wave of hair under the M of JAMES entering into the field. The obverse die does have “Dimples” from the bottom of the letters in the name JAMES GARFIELD.
  • Reverse is MDS – none noted.
