Description

2011P(USG)-100DER-001T is a reverse die used for the 2011 Ulysses S. Grant Presidential dollar at Philadelphia. TrailDies puts the president's initials, USG, after the date and mint, and 100-DER-001T then reads as dollar, reverse, first file, trails. The lines leave UNITE in UNITED, plus one faint line off the dollar sign's bottom serif, and run southeast at 140°. Late in its life the die cracked low in the dollar sign, and a crack with a chip runs through the statue's right arm. Tanaka Davis found it. Trails are usually traced to rotary polishing of the die; some attribute them to the die moving against the hub.
