Description

This spike head variety is on a 2011 Philadelphia Mint Presidential Dollar honoring Ulysses S. Grant. Presidential Dollars, struck from 2007 through 2016, featured a unique lettered edge carrying the date, mint mark, and motto — elements relocated from the coin's faces to maximize portrait and reverse design area. The spike head is the same die crack found on cents: a crack opens in the obverse die and runs from the rim into the bust, producing a raised protrusion on subsequent strikes.
