2011 (P) Presidential Dollar - James Garfield, Position A - P(JG)-100DEO-001T Trail Die Obverse

Description

Trails point straight up, at 000°, from the tops of the letters in GARFIELD on 2011P(JG)-100DEO-001T, a James Garfield Presidential dollar obverse. Its code combines 2011P (year and Philadelphia mint), Garfield's initials, 100 for a one-dollar coin, DEO for an obverse extension, and 001T, file 001 of the trail kind. On TrailDies' stage B example, a small crack leaves Garfield's left brow for the field and another starts in the hair wave below the M of JAMES and reaches into the field; the letters of JAMES GARFIELD also show small dimples at their bases. Nothing is noted on the reverse. Cal Goodard found the die. Like other trail dies, this one is usually explained by rotary polishing of the die, with some favouring die movement against the hub.

Die Markers

• Stage “B“, obverse is MDS – a small die crack is seen from the left brow into the field. Another small die crack is seen from the wave of hair under the M of JAMES entering into the field. The obverse die does have “Dimples” from the bottom of the letters in the name JAMES GARFIELD.
• Reverse is MDS – none noted.
