2011 (P) Presidential Dollar - James Garfield, Position A - (JG)-100DEO-001T Trail Die Obverse

Description

2011(JG)-100DEO-001T is a 2011 James Garfield Presidential dollar obverse with trails from the letters of JAMES GARFIELD at 315°, northwest, up and to the left. TrailDies prints this code with no mint letter: 2011, then (JG) for Garfield and 100 for the denomination, followed by DEO (obverse), the file number 001 and T (trails). Its reverse has trails too and is listed separately as 2011(JG)-100DER-001T. On the late-state coin described, a crack runs through the hair below the M, both 8s of 1881 show breaks, and on the reverse scratches cross the ED S of UNITED STATES and a crack crosses the hand holding the book. Lynn Morace found it. The standard explanation for trails is rotary polishing of the die; some numismatists instead credit die-to-hub movement.

Die Markers

• Stage “B“, obverse is MDS – a small die crack is seen from the left brow into the field. Another small die crack is seen from the wave of hair under the M of JAMES entering into the field. The obverse die does have “Dimples” from the bottom of the letters in the name JAMES GARFIELD.
• Reverse is MDS – none noted.
