Description

Discovered by Cal Goddard, the 2010D-1DER-001T holds significance as the first cataloged trail die reverse for the Denver-mint Lincoln Shield Cent, which debuted in 2010 with Lyndall Bass's Union Shield reverse design. Documented in Stage B at mid-die state, the obverse exhibits light die scratches in the field behind the line of Lincoln's jacket, while no notable trail die markers appear on the reverse at this stage. Trail die varieties on the Shield Cent design represent a newer frontier for variety collectors, as the bold geometric shield motif with its horizontal lines and vertical stripes creates a different canvas for die deterioration effects compared to the detailed architectural scene of the preceding Memorial reverse. As the inaugural trail die entry for the Denver-mint Shield Cent in the catalog, this variety establishes the baseline for a collecting niche that continues to grow as more Shield Cent dies reach advanced deterioration and are documented by variety researchers.

Die Markers
