Description

A doubled die obverse is visible on this 1864 Indian Head cent (Bronze No L variety). A doubled die occurs when a working die receives a second, misaligned impression from the hub during the die-making process, creating doubled design elements on all coins struck from that die. Unlike machine doubling, which produces flat, shelf-like doubling, a true hub-doubled die shows raised, separated design elements. In this case, doubling can be seen in Liberty and the Indian's ear. This variety is cataloged as FS-1101 and Snow-4. The 1864 Bronze No L variety was among the first bronze Indian Head cents struck after the mid-1864 composition change from copper-nickel to bronze. The "No L" designation indicates the absence of designer James Longacre's initial on the ribbon.
