1927 Lincoln Wheat Cent - Doubled Die Obverse WDDO-001 / DDO-001

Description

DDO-001, which Wexler numbers WDDO-001, is a doubled die obverse on the 1927 Lincoln wheat cent showing a light spread on the LIB of LIBERTY, IN GOD WE TRUST, Lincoln's eyelid and the 27 of the date. Both catalogs give it the Cherrypickers number FS-101; Wexler writes it FS-01-1927-101 (013.5), and VarietyVista FS-101 (13.5). Wexler's Coins and Die Varieties describes a clockwise Class I spread on LIBERTY, the date and the letters of IN GOD WE TRUST. On the obverse a series of short die scratches runs NW to SE above WE TRUST, a light scratch heads NNW off the top of the date's 2, and a series of north-south scratches lies between the O and D of GOD. On the reverse, inside the bottom of the O in OF, a die scratch runs NW to SE. Russ LeBeau submitted the coin, and Dennis Wells supplied an upgraded color photo. CONECA lists the die as 1-0-I and Crawford as CDDO-001; its Coppercoins number is 1927P-1DO-001. VarietyVista, crediting Delma K. Romines, describes the spread as light. Under marker codes UVC-1285 and DMR-002, both sides are early in stage A; stage B, a middle die state, and stage C, a late one, are unconfirmed.
