1939 Lincoln Wheat Cent - Doubled Die Obverse WDDO-001 / DDO-001

Description

Cross-referenced as Fivaz-Stanton FS-101, DDO-001, which Wexler numbers WDDO-001, is a doubled die obverse on the 1939 Lincoln wheat cent with very strong spread but a weak first hubbing on the 19 of the date, the eyelid and the RTY of LIBERTY. Wexler writes the Cherrypickers number FS-01-1939-101 (017), VarietyVista FS-101 (17). Wexler's Coins and Die Varieties calls it a very strong Class I clockwise spread, showing on the ERTY of LIBERTY, the 19, the bowtie, the upper vest fold under the left side of the bowtie, the ear and some upper hair; a strong extra eyelid also sits over the normal eye. Obverse stage A has an ENE scratch from the upper right of the N in IN, a short WSW scratch off the W in WE at its center left, many scratches roughly following the rim through the tops of the letters of IN GOD WE TRUST, and an SSW-NNE scratch between the 1 and 9; stage B adds an NNW-SSE crack on the upper forehead. Reverse stage A has several SW-NE scratches under the E of E PLURIBUS UNUM, a short ENE scratch off the E in ONE at its top, several short parallel WSW-ENE scratches through and under the A in STATES, and many north-south scratches around the T of CENT. Reverse stage B has a gouge inside the upper right of the M in UNUM and a chip on the lower right wheat ear, right-hand side, fourth grain up from the bottom. Brian Allen submitted it. CONECA lists it as 1-O-I, Breen as #2144, Crawford as CDDO-001, and Coppercoins as 1939P-1DO-001. Wexler adds that Ed Raser first reported the variety and that, in its view, the first hubbing was halted after it had left only a partial impression on the working die. VarietyVista credits Ed Raser with the report. Under its marker codes UVC-1419 and DMR-003, its early stage A is unconfirmed; in stage B both sides are in a middle die state; and in stage C the obverse is late, with a late-state die chip in the right wheat grains.
