Description
TrailDies calls 2000D-1DER-004WS a fairly strong wavy-step die for a Lincoln cent of the 2000s. The stairs bend below columns 4 through 8, more on the right, and the lines run due south at 180°. As a number, 2000D gives date and Denver mint, 1 the cent, DER the reverse design extension, 004 the file, and WS the wavy-step type, in which trails running across the Memorial's stairs give them a wavy look. The middle-die-state coin carries no obverse markers; its reverse has a small gouge under the E of PLURIBUS, another inside the first U of UNUM and two around the T of CENT. Jeremy Gardner found it. Most attribute this to rotary polishing of the die, while some think the die moved against the hub.
Die Markers
- Stage “B”, obverse is MDS – none noted.
- Reverse is MDS – small die gouge under the E of PLURIBUS. A die gouge is seen in the first U of UNUM. There are two die gouges around the T of CENT.
