Description

Cataloged by the Wexler Team as 2000-D 1¢ WDDR-003, this Lincoln Memorial Cent displays doubling on the lower left side of the seventh Memorial column — a localized displacement feature within the architectural reverse design where the column’s vertical line shows a secondary impression shifted from the primary. Obverse die markers include a die gouge near the rim above the W in WE, a small die gouge to the right of the bottom of the 2 in the date, and a small die gouge inside the bottom of the B in LIBERTY. The reverse carries its own marker set: a small die gouge just below the N in UNITED, a die gouge to the right of the top of the T in CENT, and two small die gouges on the left side of the roof of the Memorial building. No cross-references to other cataloging systems are currently known. The Lincoln Memorial Cent was designed by Frank Gasparro for the reverse, depicting the Lincoln Memorial with its twelve columns, and by Victor David Brenner for the obverse portrait. Struck at the Denver Mint in 2000, the coin was produced in copper-plated zinc composition (97.5% zinc, 2.5% copper) weighing 2.5 grams with a 19.05 mm diameter. The seventh column’s doubling location sits near the center of the Memorial facade where the seated Lincoln statue is visible between the central columns, making this a variety that affects one of the reverse design’s most architecturally prominent elements. The Denver Mint’s billion-plus annual cent production in 2000 employed a large working die inventory, and the multiple die gouges across both obverse and reverse provide a robust set of identification markers for confirming this specific die pair among the many 2000-D cents in circulation.
