2000-D Doubled Die Reverse WDDR-001
Error
Description
Partial extra columns tilted at approximately a 60-degree angle characterize this 2000 Denver Mint Lincoln Memorial Cent, the first doubled die reverse cataloged for the date. The tilted extra columns within the Memorial create a dramatic visual effect, as the ghostly second set of columns appears at a steep angle relative to the primary design. Attributed by the Wexler Team under Wexler Variety ID 2000-D 1c WDDR-001, and cross-referenced as Crawford CDDR-002. The tilted column doubling is consistent with the hubbing die receiving a second impression at a significant angular offset, producing the 60-degree displacement visible on finished coins. As WDDR-001, this variety holds a position of prominence in the date's variety listings. Lincoln Memorial Cents from 2000 mark the beginning of the new millennium in the series, and the detailed columnar architecture of Gasparro's reverse design makes column doubling one of the most visually striking forms of DDR on Memorial Cents. The angular tilt distinguishes this from more common horizontal or vertical spread patterns. Die Markers: Obverse: A short vertical die gouge can be found to the right of the upper D in GOD. A die gouge can be found to the left of the center of the S in TRUST. Reverse: A small die gouge can be found to the right of the bottom of the last Memorial column.
