Description
The 1964 Proof Kennedy Half Dollar - Accented Hair is a proof half dollar struck at the Philadelphia Mint, part of the Kennedy Half Dollars Silver 1964 to Date series. The U.S. Mint's figure of 4.0 million is every 1964 proof Kennedy half; Accented Hair examples are a small, unrecorded fraction of it. The obverse features John F. Kennedy facing left, based on the presidential medal by Gilroy Roberts and the reverse displays the Presidential Seal — a heraldic eagle with shield, olive branch, and arrows. Rushed into production weeks after President Kennedy's assassination. Both Philadelphia and Denver struck massive quantities that were immediately hoarded. As a proof issue, this coin was struck multiple times on specially prepared polished planchets using polished dies, producing mirror-like fields and frosted design elements prized by collectors. Struck at the original U.S. Mint facility, in continuous operation since 1792. Struck in 90% silver, 10% copper, weighing 12.5 grams, 30.61 mm in diameter, with a reeded edge. Cataloged as PCGS #6801.
