Description

This is the doubled die obverse of the 1964-D Kennedy Half Dollar. The obverse design was impressed into the working die in two slightly different positions, so the die itself carries a doubled image and every coin struck from it shows the same doubling in the same place. The displacement is consistent in direction across the affected elements, and both images are fully formed and rounded. That is what distinguishes a true doubled die from machine doubling, which happens during the strike and leaves a flat shelf with no serifs. The 1964 (D) Kennedy Half Dollar - DDO, struck at the Denver Mint, is part of the Kennedy Half Dollars Silver 1964 to Date collection. The obverse features John F. Kennedy facing left, based on the presidential medal by Gilroy Roberts and the reverse displays the Presidential Seal — a heraldic eagle with shield, olive branch, and arrows. Rushed into production weeks after President Kennedy's assassination. Both Philadelphia and Denver struck massive quantities that were immediately hoarded. The Denver Mint, which grew from an 1860s gold rush assay office, has served as a major production facility since 1906.
