1964 Proof Kennedy Half Dollar - Accented Hair - Doubled Die Reverse DDR-006

Description

Light triple spread on all lettering and stars around the rim — strongest on UNITED, HALF DOLLAR, and the stars from the K-6 to K-9 positions — distinguishes this proof 1964 Kennedy Half Dollar doubled die reverse as one of the more visually complex DDR varieties for the inaugural year of the series. Cataloged by VarietyVista under die markers UVC-035 and DMR-035, the die's Stage A shows both reverse and obverse in early mid-die state (EMDS), with Stages B (MDS) and C (LDS) unconfirmed. This is a proof issue, paired with obverse die ODV-001 (Accented Hair) and reverse die RDV-001 (Straight G) — the famous Accented Hair variety where extra hair detail is visible above Kennedy's ear, one of the most sought-after Kennedy Half Dollar varieties. Triple spread — three distinct impressions from three hubbing operations — is less common than simple doubling and indicates the die underwent at least three hub impressions with progressive misalignment. The 1964 Kennedy Half Dollar, authorized within weeks of President Kennedy's assassination in November 1963, was struck in 90% silver and generated unprecedented public demand. The combination of DDR-006 with the Accented Hair obverse and Straight G reverse places this at the intersection of multiple collectible attributes — die variety, proof format, inaugural year, silver composition, and historical significance — making it a priority target for Kennedy Half Dollar specialists.
