1964 Proof Kennedy Half Dollar - Accented Hair - Doubled Die Obverse DDO-028

Description

Numbered twenty-eighth in the doubled die obverse sequence for the inaugural 1964 Kennedy Half Dollar, DDO-028 presents an unusually complex doubling pattern: medium quadruple spread on RTY of LIBERTY and the 4 of the date, combined with light triple spread on WE TRUST. Quadruple spread indicates the hub impressed the die at least four slightly offset positions during the sinking process, creating four overlapping ghost images of the affected letters — a degree of multiple hubbing that is uncommon even in a series as thoroughly studied as the 1964 Kennedy Half. VarietyVista assigns UVC-333 and DMR-043, tracking three die stages: Stage A with obverse and reverse in Early Die State, Stage B at Mid Die State, and Stage C in Late Die State (unconfirmed). The comments reveal this is a proof issue featuring the ODV-001 (Accented Hair) obverse paired with RDV-001 (Straight G) reverse. The Accented Hair designation identifies the obverse die variety where Kennedy's hair above the ear shows enhanced detail from additional engraving — a characteristic that has made Accented Hair proofs one of the most sought-after Kennedy Half Dollar varieties. Finding a doubled die obverse on an Accented Hair proof creates a dual-variety coin that commands significant collector interest. The pairing of quadruple doubling with the Accented Hair obverse makes DDO-028 one of the more desirable die varieties within the already prestigious 1964 Kennedy proof series.
