1964 Proof Kennedy Half Dollar - Accented Hair - Doubled Die Obverse DDO-022

Description

Distinguished by a triple spread on the digit 4 of the date and the letter Y of "LIBERTY," the 1964 Proof Kennedy Half Dollar DDO-022 elevates beyond typical doubled dies into the realm of triple-hubbed varieties. VarietyVista catalogs this under UVC-028 with DMR-028, noting a medium spread on "IN GOD WE TRUST" and the date, with the triple impression on selected elements indicating the working die received three discrete hub impressions with slightly different alignment — an uncommon occurrence that creates three overlapping images rather than the standard two. The variety is classified with ODV-001, the "Accented Hair" obverse variety, paired with RDV-001, the "Straight G" reverse — both critical attributions in the first-year Kennedy Half Dollar variety framework. "Accented Hair" refers to the proof-only obverse die variety where the hair detail above Kennedy's ear appears stronger and more sharply defined than on standard proof dies, a variety that is independently collected and valued. Three die stages are documented: Stage A in EDS is unconfirmed; Stage B shows both obverse and reverse at MDS; Stage C in LDS is also unconfirmed. Twenty-two doubled die obverses cataloged for the 1964 proof Kennedy Half Dollar reflects the extraordinary intensity of collector examination this premier issue has received since the 1960s. The combination of triple hubbing, Accented Hair obverse, and proof production status makes DDO-022 a multi-faceted variety that appeals to several overlapping collector communities: Kennedy Half specialists, proof die variety enthusiasts, and Accented Hair set builders all have reason to pursue confirmed examples.
