Description

Cataloged by the Wexler Team as 1963-D 25-cent WRPM-003 with no other known cross-references, this Washington Silver Quarter exhibits a D/D Tilted (Rotated) repunched mintmark — a variety created when the D mintmark punch was applied to the working die more than once, with the second impression slightly rotated relative to the first, leaving visible traces of the original position beneath or beside the final mintmark. Die markers on the obverse include thin north-south and northwest-southeast die scratches throughout, a northwest-southeast die scratch in front of the chin, and a die gouge left of the 6 in the date. The reverse carries thin north-south die scratches throughout, strong die gouges through the eagle's neck, die gouges above the left claw, a strong die scratch far below the U in UNITED, and strong die scratches connecting the bottoms of the TE in QUARTER. This extensive network of die scratches and gouges across both surfaces makes this working die pair particularly well-fingerprinted, providing numerous secondary attribution points beyond the repunched mintmark itself. The 1963-D Washington Quarter was struck at the Denver Mint in 90% silver and 10% copper, weighing 6.25 grams with a diameter of 24.26 mm — the penultimate year of silver composition before the Coinage Act of 1965 transitioned the denomination to copper-nickel clad. Repunched mintmarks on silver-era quarters are sought by collectors as tangible evidence of the hand-punching process that was standard before mint marks were incorporated into master dies.
