Description

A combination variety of considerable interest, the 1963-D Washington Quarter WDDO-004 pairs a doubled die obverse with a doubled die reverse (listed as WDDR-002 in the Wexler files). Attributed by the Wexler Team, the obverse doubling appears on the lower right side of the 6 in the date, while the reverse WDDR-002 shows a strong clockwise spread on the ES of STATES and the O in OF. Obverse die markers include a die scratch running east-southeast from the top right of the second T in TRUST. On the reverse, a strong die gouge sits just below the eagle's inner feathers north of the arrow feathers. Finding both a doubled die obverse and a doubled die reverse produced by the same die pair is relatively uncommon, and this combination status elevates the variety's appeal among Washington Quarter specialists. Collectors should examine both sides carefully, as either the obverse or reverse doubling alone might be mistaken for a single-sided variety.
