1963 (D) Washington Quarter - Doubled Die Obverse WDDO-002

Description

1963-D WDDO-002 is a doubled die obverse on the 1963-D Washington quarter, cataloged by the Wexler team. A strong spread toward the center appears on the lower queue, the designer's initials, the date and IN GOD WE TRUST, and the TY of LIBERTY shows a counterclockwise (CCW) spread pivoting from about 7:00. On the obverse, a very strong gouge leaves the rim heading WSW and crosses the upper Y in LIBERTY, and a gouge runs WNW off the T from its top left to the rim. A strong scratch heads SE off the N of IN from its bottom left. An E/W crack crosses the upper forehead and continues through the hair; another crack crosses the bust's base and lower queue and reaches into the field on either side of the lower bust; and a die chip sits on the bust's base just over the 9 in the date. On the reverse, beside the F in OF, right of its top, there is a small gouge, and a crack descends the eagle's right wing. Lou Coles submitted the variety. Wexler lists no cross-references. Wexler includes it in its "Best Of" varieties.
