Description

A heavy die crack traversing the reverse accompanies the doubled die obverse on WDDO-005 of the 1963 Denver Mint Washington Quarter. Struck in 90% silver, this variety shows spread on IN GOD WE TRUST, the date, and the lower queue (the gathered ponytail at the back of Washington's head). The queue doubling provides a portrait-area diagnostic distinct from the more commonly doubled motto and date zones, as the hair detail's curved form displays hub displacement as a shadow-like secondary contour. The heavy reverse die crack documents advanced die deterioration, suggesting this die pair saw extended production before retirement.
