1962-D Repunched Mintmark RPM-002

Description

Tracked by VarietyVista with die identifiers UVC-389 and DMR-003, this 1962-D RPM-002 Roosevelt Silver Dime presents a D/D Rotated CCW (counter-clockwise) repunched mintmark — a variety where the secondary D impression was applied with a slight counter-clockwise rotation relative to the primary, creating a rotational offset between the two punch impressions rather than a simple directional shift. Three die stages document the die's progression: Stage A at early-to-mid die state with both reverse and obverse in EMDS; Stage B at mid-die-state where the reverse reaches MDS and a die chip develops on the nostril of Roosevelt's portrait; and Stage C at late die state (LDS, unconfirmed). The nostril die chip appearing in Stage B serves as a particularly useful attribution point because the nose is a prominent high-relief feature on Sinnock's Roosevelt portrait, making the chip readily visible under moderate magnification. Rotational RPMs produce a distinctive visual signature where different portions of the D letter show varying degrees of separation — the top and bottom of the letter appear to shift in slightly different directions due to the CCW rotational component. John R. Sinnock designed the Roosevelt Dime, struck at the Denver Mint in 1962 in 90% silver composition — 90% silver and 10% copper — weighing 2.50 grams with a diameter of 17.91 mm. The 1962-D was among the final years of silver dime production, struck just two years before the composition change mandated by the Coinage Act of 1965. The RPM-002 catalog number positions this as the second documented repunched mintmark for the 1962-D date, and the rotational character of the repunching distinguishes it from directional RPMs in the same date family.
