1958-D Repunched Mintmark WRPM-011

Description

Designated WRPM-011 in the Wexler catalog, this 1958-D Roosevelt Dime features a D/D tilted (rotated) repunched mintmark where the original D punch was placed at a different angle before the final impression corrected the position. As the last year before the 1965 switch from 90% silver to clad composition, 1958-D dimes occupy a transitional place in the series and attract collector attention for both their silver content and variety potential. The obverse carries several useful die markers: a straight G in GOD, a chipped die crack on the nose above the nostril, and a short die scratch running north-to-south by the west-to-east junction near the lower side of the L in LIBERTY. The reverse displays heavy multi-directional die scratches on the upper olive leaf and surrounding field, die chips on that same leaf, and a north-to-south die crack positioned slightly right of center on the base of the torch holder. These extensive markers on both sides make attribution straightforward once the tilted D repunch is confirmed under magnification.
