1958-D Repunched Mintmark WRPM-016
ErrorDescription
Displaying a D/D tilted or rotated relative to the primary punch, WRPM-016 on the 1958 Denver Mint Jefferson Nickel documents a rotationally displaced repunched mint mark. The secondary D impression sits at a different angle than the primary letter, creating a diagnostic where portions of the underlying tilted D extend beyond the primary mint mark's contours at specific clock positions. Cataloged under Wexler Variety ID 1958-D 5¢ WRPM-016, rotated repunched mint marks represent a subset of RPM varieties where the punch was not only offset positionally but also angularly between applications. Felix Schlag's Jefferson Nickel places the mint mark on the reverse near Monticello where the tilted secondary D creates its diagnostic. Tracy Mundy submitted this variety for documentation. Repunched mint marks from this era result from individual hand punching of each working die. The 1958 Denver nickel belongs to the late 1950s production era, and the rotational component of the D/D displacement distinguishes this variety from simple directional repunched mint marks by adding an angular diagnostic dimension.
