Cataloged by the Wexler Team, WRPM-007 of the 1958-D Jefferson nickel is a repunched mintmark variety showing a secondary D impression. Collectors should note that mechanical doubling inside and on the right side of the mintmark should not be confused with genuine RPM doubling. Mechanical doubling results from die bounce during striking and produces flat, shelf-like displacement, while a true repunched mintmark shows a rounded secondary impression from a second blow of the mintmark punch into the working die. This distinction is critical for accurate attribution. The 1958-D Jefferson nickel was struck at Denver during the era when mintmarks were individually hand-punched into each working die, a process inherently prone to producing RPM varieties when the engraver's first punch was slightly misaligned.
