1958-D Repunched Mintmark WRPM-004

Description

Recorded under Wexler Variety ID: 1958-D 5¢ WRPM-004 and photographed by Brian Ribar, this Denver Jefferson Nickel displays a repunched mintmark from the late 1950s — a period when Denver served as the sole branch mint producing circulating five-cent pieces. San Francisco had ceased business strike nickel production after 1955, leaving Denver and Philadelphia to supply the nation's needs. The 1958-D therefore represents a two-mint production year, and Denver bore the full weight of branch mint demand. Hand-punched mintmarks remained standard, with each working die receiving its D through individual manual application at the Philadelphia die shop. Four RPM varieties cataloged for the 1958-D nickel indicate moderate repunching instances during that year's preparation. Felix Schlag's twenty-year-old design continued unmodified. Ribar's contribution to the photographic record of Jefferson Nickel RPMs has helped standardize the visual references collectors and dealers use for variety attribution, turning otherwise ambiguous magnification findings into confident identifications.
